The back is lightly incised with double rings round the heads of the rivets securing the bosses and with a possible line of OGAM lettering joining the two circles at the end; there is a testing nick on the longest edge. The decoration consists of two continuous, opposed rows of punched, apex-to-apex V-shapes with club-shaped arms joining at the 'handles', each pair enclosing a minute, punched triangle, mostly pointing outwards. But, to one side of the centre of the front of the ring, one pair of Vs lacking triangles are each turned to point outwards, while, on the other side, an adjacent pair of the sub-circular shapes left between the pairs of Vs are punched, the one towards the centre with two triangles of slightly different sizes and the other with just one. Also, at one end of the band two pairs of Vs are placed on their sides with single triangles above and below the junctions of the arms, while at the other end there is only a single pair of Vs on its side. Here and there the punching has pushed out the adjacent edges of the ring a little, giving them a slightly undulating appearance; the inner surface is plain. Title A name given to the resource 52 Identifier An unambiguous reference to the resource within a given context 2009,8023.5 Type The nature or genre of the resource hacksilver, bossed penannular brooch Description An account of the resource Silver fragment (hacksilver) cut from the inner end of the sub-triangular terminal of a bossed penannular brooch with one plain, domed boss surviving that is faceted round the base; at the hoop end of the piece there is a slight step up to a triangular panel with a round lobe projecting from its base on the inner edge; both the lobe and the other end of the base are punched with rings linked by a line of beading, behind which is incised a plain triangle with one hollow side and further bordered by two billeted lines, the one on the outer edge ending in a rectangular facet; similar billeted borders on the part of the terminal surviving beneath the step enclose an incised, knotted ribbon with a median groove partly surrounding the boss, which is further enclosed by a band of two billeted lines flanking a plain line; the back is decorated with part of a double incised ring round the end of the rivet securing the boss and, at the junction with the end of the hoop, with a plain, interlaced ribbon on a pointillé ground and a contour line; there are also two grooves and a group of light incisions next to the end of the rivet. There are three testing nicks on the outer edge of the fragment, two on the hoop end and four on the boss.
